When you’re creating your website it’s a good idea to make sure that you have the right priorities in mind. Sure, you’re the designer (and if you’re not the designer then you at least have the final say about how the page looks), but the main person to keep in mind is the end user. Website navigation and original content will go a long way to please your end user.
Will the page be attractive and pleasing to the eye? Will it be easy to read and navigate? Ease of access and usability of your site can make or break the way visitors feel about your page.
When it comes to raising your page rank on Google, there are a number of factors involved. The best thing you can do for yourself in the beginning is have a clear idea of your goals and realistic expectations about how and when you’ll get there.
The first thing you should know is that it more than likely isn’t going to happen overnight. Google and other search engines prefer traffic and links that are natural and organic, and this can take some time. Building backlinks is a good way to get this started, but you can’t just go out and have 200 of them put up in a day and expect results.
There is a perception out there that you need to update your homepage everyday to maintain rankings. Here at Melbourne SEO Services we don’t think that’s true. Read on to find out why.
One of the many sites we maintain is www.meta-formula.com which is an authority website on the Metastock niche, a sub niche of the stock market niche. Because we’ve been busy concentrating on other businesses, we haven’t updated this site for five or six years! At the very most, all we’ve done is some basic link building and perhaps added a few additional pages. That said, the homepage has remained unchanged all that time and yet its ranking position has stayed solid at position number 2, second only to the makers of the software.
So why do people think you need to update your homepage? I think it has developed out of the rise of popularity of blog websites, specifically WordPress blogs – so many of them rank incredibly well. As a result many SEOers have jumped to conclusions and believed that the reason for their good rankings is that the content is regularly updated. Unfortunately, SEO doesn’t happen in a vacuum and there’s a whole host of other factors at play here.
First, do you know what an H1 tag is? In short, H1 tags are simply html code that call out and format certain text as a heading. Many SEOers say that it’s important, for good SEO, to have an H1 tag set on every page with the primary keyword phrase within the tag. Is that true?
As a standard rule of thumb, for good on page SEO, you need to pick out what your primary keyword phrases you’re targeting are going to be. Next you need to make sure it’s in your title tag and in your meta description. You can put your primary keyword in your meta keywords, but it really isn’t important anymore. We just do it because it makes us feel better . Then, make sure the keyword is mentioned throughout the page. Include it in an H1 tag and then mention it a couple of times on that page. You might even put it in bold, italics and/or make it a link.
Don’t focus on keyword density because it definitely shouldn’t be a priority. Five or six years ago, people would pick a keyword and aim for 1%, 2% or 3% density. With 2% or 3%, the keyword would be all over the place and didn’t look natural.
As years passed, Google has gotten smarter and keyword stuffing doesn’t quite work the way it used to. In SEO today, the aim of the game is to replicate what happens in nature – that is to say, if it doesn’t look natural, don’t do it!
Some confusion exists about how much weight the meta keywords have in the ranking algorithm and how much it can affect your rankings. Matt Cutts, a spokesman from Google, has said that they’ve been ignoring them for years, as have a few other search engines.
Yes it’s true. Years ago, people would use the meta keywords to squish in as many keywords as they could and it worked. It used to be an important part of the algorithm but that’s now no longer the case.
So how should you optimize the keywords on your page?
Should you consider choosing a domain name with hyphens in it or is this really going to hurt your search engine results?
The reason many SEOers looked at using hyphenated domain names was that the primary keyword phrases, without spaces, had all but disappeared. For example, melbournerealestate.com may have gone but melbourne-real-estate.com may not have been taken. The hyphenated version was still very keyword loaded, so many SEOers saw it as a good option.
In my opinion, the use of hyphens can make the domain name look more spammy, so from a branding point of view, the domain name without the hyphens is a lot stronger. That said, I believe it’s a misconception that domain names with hyphens won’t rank as well as those without. Read More>>
So you’ve got your Google page ranking pretty high and you’re showing a lot of traffic to your website. Congratulations! Now – how do you know who these people are, and how are you going to market directly to them? It’s simple – you get them on your list.
Ask any internet marketer what the most important piece of their business is and they’ll tell you that it’s their list. Without a list you just have people visiting your website – and nothing more.
There’s a scene in Dude, Where’s My Car that makes me laugh every single time I watch it. The guys have just discovered they have new tattoos and go back and forth asking each other what theirs say. ”Dude.” “Sweet.” “Dude.” And on and on it goes. But when it comes to sales, one of the most important things to avoid is confusion.
People who are confused do not purchase anything, making it important to make sure that your customers are not confused. It’s a simple but important website conversion optimization tip.
This is not to say that you should not give them choices; rather, you want to make sure that their choices are laid out in a way that is clear and concise and where everything is easy to find.
An easy way to avoid this is to follow the “one page, one purpose” rule. Read More>>
