<p>One dinosaur of print media which seems to be, all too often, in the firing line is the Yellow Pages.  Sure, on an environmental level, the Yellow Pages [physical book], may be seen as a colossal waste of paper but what about its effectiveness?</p>
<p>It seems that those who are most aggressively against the Yellow Pages are typically the ones who have the most to gain from its demise &#8211; namely online marketers, SEO and SEM companies.</p>
<p>So, before condemning the Yellow Pages, we decided to hit the streets of Melbourne to hear what the everyday person thinks. I guess you could call it some old fashioned market research <img src='http://www.melbourneseoservices.com/wp-includes/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif' alt=':)' class='wp-smiley' /> </p>

<p>Q1. How often do you use the print version of the Yellow Pages? <span id="more-1297"></span></p>

<li>7.69% use it regularly</li>
<li>23.08% once a month</li>
<li>15.38% once a year</li>
<li>53.85% never use it</li>
</ul>
<p>Q2. How do you search for products and services you&#8217;re looking for?<!--more--></p>

<li>92.86% use Google.com</li>
<li>7.14% use Yellow Pages</li>
</ul>
<p><em>Respondent </em><em>Quote: &#8220;I reckon the yellow pages is obsolete, why would you spend money on the yellow pages when they&#8217;ll just as easily find you on Google.&#8221;</em></p>

<li>92.86% didn&#8217;t know</li>
<li>7.14% knew what SEO is</li>

<p>Q5. How do you choose what to click on Google?</p>
<ul>
<li>46.15% visit top few results</li>
<li>30.76% click only top 5</li>
<li>100% never go past the first page</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>So what did we learn?</strong></p>
<p>A very interesting sidenote to this survey emerged in relation to search engine optimization (SEO). Whilst 100% of respondents use Google every day, only 7% of respondents knew what SEO was.</p>
<p>Unsurprisingly where people chose to click next, on the search engine results page (SERPS), was heavily weighted towards the top of Google with 100% of people claiming to only browse the first page of search results &#8211; 46% of respondents concentrating on the top 3.</p>
<p><em>Respondent Quote: &#8220;Your eyes are automatically drawn to the top of every search engine page. It&#8217;s human nature to look at the top of the page rather than the bottom.&#8221;</em></p>
<p>For us, it became even more clear that an &#8220;SEO Knowledge Gap&#8221; exists. Browsers find the few first results in the SERPs the most relevant and important whilst having no clue as to how Google works. People simply trust Google is providing the best information. This represents a great opportunity for businesses to capitalize on the trust people have with Google&#8217;s brand. If your website features more prominently on Google, your website is automatically seen as the authority.</p>
<p>So  here&#8217;s 3 final questions to ask yourself:</p>
<p><strong>1. Will online media advertising kill offline print media?</strong><strong><br />
2. Does this signal the end of the print version Yellow Pages?<br />
3. Is online marketing and SEO a more effective, better value for money, form of advertising?</strong></p>
<p>This study does not conclusively answer any of these questions. But that said, these are questions every business owner should be asking&#8230;</p>

<p>Another day another Google Update &#8211; we&#8217;ve now had multiple Panda updates, over optimisation filters and now the Google Penguin update. I haven&#8217;t seen this many updates from Google in such a short time in my entire SEO history.</p>

<p>Interestingly, when you read it you&#8217;ll find there&#8217;s nothing new here and we&#8217;ve been teaching these best practises for years (as such our clients have been safe with the most recent update). Perhaps what&#8217;s changed is how Google is now targeting these algorithmically?<span id="more-7421"></span></p>
<p>In any case, there&#8217;s blood in the water and people are still jumping to conclusions as to what&#8217;s going on. With so many changes released all in one go, it&#8217;s actually getting harder to isolate what issues a website might have. It&#8217;s like you need a checklist to ensure your website stays on the right side of Google.</p>
<p>With more data rolling in every day as we analyze our sites, clients sites and&#8230; I&#8217;ve had more people call me in the last couple of weeks (wanting me to fix bad SEO) than ever before.</p>
<p>I&#8217;m thinking it&#8217;s almost time for me to release another SEO update to share what I know. For now, stick to quality with links and content &#8211; diversity is the key &#8211; and if you haven&#8217;t already, start improving your social indicators!</p>
<p>The big winners in the most recent update was YouTube and Google Plus.</p>
<p>But I digress, I&#8217;ll save all that for my SEO update.</p>

<p>Ok I know those updates were mostly around SEO this week but that&#8217;s where most of the action has been happening.</p>
<p>The biggest lesson with this Google Penguin update is, don&#8217;t rely 100% on SEO, you must build a business with more than one leg. Video, social, email, ppc and solid business fundamentals are now more important than ever.</p>
<p>Stick with it, you&#8217;re on the right track and you&#8217;ll often find the biggest opportunities when the masses run for the hills.</p>

<p>Having identified the keywords you&#8217;re going to target, you now need to ensure Google sees your website as a good match for those keywords when people are searching them. This is called website optimisation. To do this you need to put your keywords in the right places on your website &#8211; this is know as <a title="on page optimisation" href="http://www.melbourneseoservices.com/category/seo-blog/on-page-optimisation/">onpage optimisation</a>.</p>
<p>We recommend each page of your website should only be optimised for a maximum of 1-2 keywords. And for each page, include your keyword in the following places: <span id="more-7378"></span></p>
<ul>
<li>The title tag</li>
<li>The meta description</li>
<li>The meta keywords</li>
<li>Within an H1 tag</li>
<li>Early and often in the text on your webpage</li>
<li>Within an internal link</li>
</ul>

<p><strong>Link Building</strong></p>
<p>Arguably the most important stage in any <a href="http://www.melbourneseoservices.com/stage-1-planning-your-seo-campaign/" target='_blank' >SEO campaign</a>, link building is how you make your website become more popular. Simply put, you want to get as many links to your website, using your targeted keywords, and from a good range of sources.</p>
<p>*Please note: <a title="link building strategy" href="http://www.melbourneseoservices.com/link-building-strategy-2/">Link building</a> needs to appear ‘natural’. That is to say, it wouldn&#8217;t look natural to go from zero links to ten thousand overnight. Similarly, it wouldn&#8217;t look natural if all the links pointing to your website came from one place or if they said the same thing. In short, you want a good range of one-way links sent to different sections of your website that gradually build over time.</p>
<p>If you&#8217;re building links yourself, the easiest way to do this is by publishing good quality articles and then syndicating these on other websites. To find out more about this method, search &#8216;article marketing&#8217; on Google.</p>

<p>First things first, you&#8217;ve got to know the landscape of your market. You need to know how to do <a title="keyword research" href="http://www.melbourneseoservices.com/keyword-research/">keyword research</a>. What searches are your clients typing into Google? Who are you competing against and what are they doing? The aim here is to build a list of potential keywords to further analyse and at this point, the more the merrier.</p>
<p>Start with a common word or phrase that is appropriate to your business. Your starting point doesn&#8217;t need to be clever or creative, just relevant to your business niche. For example, a good starting point, if you were a dentist, might be &#8216;dentist&#8217;. Search this keyword using one of the following keyword tools:<span id="more-7365"></span></p>

<li>Wordtracker</li>

<p>These tools are designed to help you expand your keyword list by offering a number of derivatives or suggestions related to that keyword. They will also tell you how often those keywords have been searched and how competitive they are. Document all those keywords you think are appropriate and run any additional searches on any newly discovered phrases.</p>
<p>Now with a big list of keywords, you need to identify the top ten to twenty keywords to start targeting. You should identify those keywords that represent the best opportunities for your niche. You want keywords that are &#8216;buying phrases&#8217; with a good balance between low competition whilst also being highly searched.</p>
<p>Buying phrases (as opposed to browsing phrases) are more specific searches that indicate the customer is ready to purchase. For example, a user searching ‘Sony Handycam HDR-SR11’, as opposed to just ‘Sony’, is much further down the buying funnel. They know what they want and their choice of keyword search will reflect this. You want buyers… not browsers.</p>
