Directory submission used to be a lot more effective than it is these days. However, it is still a good easy and free method to create effective and natural one way links to your website. They are also possibly the easiest step of the SEO Method to explode your traffic.
There are many free sites available that will allow you to submit your website to directory submissions such as One Way Text Link, Best Web Directories and Blurbpoint.
If you would prefer to have someone do the work for you, there are services out there that will do this such as Directory Maximizer. You provide the text for your title, the description and the keywords you would like to link to. Even with a service, this is very cheap to do.
If you handle the directory submissions yourself, or if you choose to use a service, be sure they will allow rotation of keywords. You do not want every site under the directory submission to have the same text, so make sure you mix it up and provide variations on the keywords, and use the URL as well. You want your submissions to look natural, and these variations will help you achieve this.
We generally use 150-200 links, creating plenty of inbound links that include my URL and keywords. Most of these links will point back to your money site.
Anything that can help you explode your traffic yet only requires a few clicks on an automated form is definitely worth your time (and money, should you choose to go that route).
Many of the directory submission sites also show the page rank of their directories, so if you want to be choosy and only submit to the higher ranked pages you can do that as well, providing quality links from pages with high rankings.
